Undergraduate Work Learn Program

1. Orientation Session – The orientation session introduces students to the program and provides an opportunity to connect with fellow participants, mentors, and the WL Program Coordinator. During this session, students are guided through program requirements, expectations, and key milestones. Participants also receive an overview of essential lab fundamentals, including effective time management in the lab, proper lab notebook documentation, and goal-setting strategies.
2. Industry Tour – The industry tour offers participants the opportunity to visit a local biotechnology company, gain insight into day-to-day operations, and explore state-of-the-art equipment and technologies. During the tour, students meet professional scientists and learn more about their roles and career paths. This experience also serves as an excellent networking opportunity and provides valuable perspectives on the diverse career options available after graduation.
3. Professional Development Workshop – During the program, participants participate in a professional development workshop designed to support development of practical career skills. While the specific topic varies each year and is partially shaped by the student cohort, past workshops have focused on writing cover letters and CVs, preparing for interviews, and developing graduate school applications. The workshop provides participants with the opportunity to create application materials and gain concrete skills they can apply in future academic and professional contexts.
4. 3-MT Presentation – The final program component focuses on developing participants’ organizational and communication skills through a 3-Minute Thesis presentation. This event invites cohort members to celebrate their research experience while showcasing the work they have completed throughout the year as part of the program. Presentations are evaluated by graduate students and a panel of mentors, with prizes awarded to the top presentations.

Program Roadmap
