Trainees in our programs gain access to a wide range of professional development training activities offered in collaboration with our partners. These are designed to support professional skills development and exploration of diverse pathways within and beyond academia.
The UBC School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) offers Propels, a suite of workshops, seminars and panels to support professional development in biomedical engineering. These sessions shed light on career opportunities in the field beyond the academic setting, equip trainees with skills to translate research into-real-world impact, and provide opportunities to learn from and engage with experts from diverse backgrounds and roles. Propels sessions are organized into four streams: Innovation & Partnerships, BME Career Pathing & Practical Skills for Trainees, Professional Skills, and Leadership & Pedagogy.
The Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a non-profit organization that supports early-stage technology start-ups in science and engineering. Its programs help companies navigate the intricacies of entrepreneurship, translate their research, and ultimately commercialize intellectual property generated from academic research discoveries. CDL delivers seminars for our trainees to increase awareness of the translational and commercialization opportunities of their research.
Lyric Management, run by career coach Robyn Roscoe, offers training programs and workshops to cultivate essential skills—such as project management, leadership, organization and communication—for success across academic, industry and related career paths. Trainees benefit from Robyn’s expert guidance through seminars on topics including time management and goal setting, as well as potentially through individualized career coaching.
We collaborate with our industry partners to offer engaging on-site visits that provide trainees with an inside look at the biotechnology industry work environment. Each visit typically consists of brief presentation overview of the company, a guided tour of the facilities, and a networking session with their scientists and staff. Through these experiences, trainees gain valuable insight into how industry workplaces operate at scale and connect with professionals across a range of roles and career stages.
